If you are looking to buy a house where you are planning on staying long-term, there are going to be some things that you are going to want to look for.
School Districts
If you are planning on staying in your new house for a long time and you are planning on having a family, then one of the things that you are going to look for is what the schools are like. You will want to not only check the school district, but you also want to check the particular school. For example, if the school district has three elementary schools, you will also want to make sure that you check out where each elementary school has its territory so you can make sure you get your house in the right territory. Do keep in mind that schools' ratings will change somewhat over the years, so you will want to look at not just their current ratings but also how they've performed historically. If the school that you are interested in has improved their performance consistently over the past few years, they are more likely to stay performing well.
Neighborhood Demographics
You also want to take a look at the neighborhood demographics. You should be able to ask your real estate agent if they have that information. What you are looking for is the average age of the other homeowners in the area, as well as if there are a lot of children. You want to know that you are moving into a neighborhood where you will be comfortable for a long time. If you have young children, you aren't going to want to move into an area that is predominantly populated by senior citizens because that could cause problems with neighbors complaining about your children. But, if the population is a mixed age range, then you are likely to have friends in the neighborhood for your children to play with, as well as services like parks, youth sports leagues, and summer programs.
Some people are looking for homes where they will only live for a few years, but if you are looking for a place where you want to spend many years and raise your children, then you are going to need to make sure that you aren't just looking for things that will make you happy now, but also for things that will keep you happy in years to come.
